Hi, I am

Arthur

WHO'S

THIS

Guy?

Hi! My name is Arthur.

Botanists also call me Ficus Binnendijkii Amstel King. I am also part of the giant Ficus family. I am a real eye-catcher with my beautiful long leaves, which vary from red to green. With me, you are sure to make a statement in your home!

Originally I can be found in parts of Asia, Africa, Australia and South America, where I can get huge! You may also have heard of my nickname: the rubber plant. I used to be very important for the production of rubber! Not anymore, I prefer to stand around the house and display my beauty.

MORE INFO

  • Where should you place me?
  • I like to be in a place where I can catch some sun rays, but not too much! My leaves can't handle that. So place me near a window facing west or east, or two meters from a window facing south. Make sure I do not suffer from drafts, and then I will love to hang out there. Leave me here and don't move me around, I don't like change. It is best to turn me around every now and then, so that all my leaves can enjoy the sun.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • A slightly moist soil, I like that. Just make sure you don't give me too much water, as I don't tolerate this well. A regular sip of lukewarm water is enough for me. Keep in mind that this can vary per season. In the winter I drink less than in the summer, due to the sunlight and the heat in summer. And: the brighter the location, the more I drink. Also water me from below, this is better for my roots. Before watering always check whether I need water by lifting me up. Am I heavy? Then skip the watering. Am I light? Then I would like a sip!

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • I need nutrition during the growing season, which usually runs from March to September. During this period, I like to get fertilizer once a month, in the ratio indicated on the packaging. Don't give me too much fertilizer, because my roots don't like that. Outside the growing season, you do not need to give me any nutrition, my reserves are sufficient.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • Just leave me in my own pot for the first few months after you buy me. I always like to get used to my new surroundings first before I get a new pot. You can, of course, put me in a decorative pot with my original pot. After the first repotting, I like a new pot every two years. Preferably one that is 20% larger than my previous pot. Repot me in spring, as I have the most energy to recover from my move during this period. I also like to get new potting soil, full of nutrients. I can grow very fast, so it might happen that I need a new pot sooner. You can easily recognize this by the roots coming out from under the pot or a cracked pot.

Always use an inner pot in a decorative pot. This way you can easily check if I need water. It is also easier to water me from below this way.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • You don't have to prune me. Just shake me and you'll see that my old leaves will fall off. Am I growing so fast that I'm starting to get strange shoots? Feel free to cut these off to keep me in good shape.

  • What is my superpower?
  • I am a star at purifying the air! I make sure that my living space is provided with clean air. I do this by converting CO2 in the air into oxygen. This is good for your concentration, energy and creativity!

  • Did you know that...
  • I do like myself a little rain! Just put me outside during a summer splash of rain, I love it! That way my leaves get a nice rinse too. Afterwards I can purify the air even better!

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
