Hi, I am

Audrey

WHO'S

THIS

Girl?

Hi! My name is Audrey.

My fancy name is Ficus Benghalensis Audrey. You can probably tell from my beautiful leaves that I am part of the Ficus family. Speaking of my leaves, they are velvety soft. Give them a little feel and be surprised! I am bred as a little tree, but if you take good care of me, I can become a big one!

Together with Mels, I flew here all the way from Costa Rica. Joost and Freek found us here and decided to take us to Plantanious. I am still growing up in Costa Rica, where I grow from a shoot on my mother to a full independent plant in one and a half year. Impressive, right? After that, I fly over to the Netherlands to continue to grow at Plantanious for a few more months. Are you curious about where I’m from? Check the video!

MORE INFO

  • Where should you place me?
  • I grew up in warm and humid Costa Rica, so I like a warm place with high humidity. Therefore, I prefer to be placed in front of an east or west facing window, or a few metres away from a south facing window. Be careful with draft winds, though. I don’t like that. I quickly become attached to a place, so I prefer not to move around much.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • I am very sensitive to too much water, because then my leaves will fall. It is best to give me a sip of lukewarm water regularly and check my soil by, for example, sticking your finger in it before offering me another drink. Does soil stick to your finger? Don’t give me a drink yet. Is your finger clean and dry? You can give me a sip. Water me from below by putting water in my saucer, so my roots grow down nicely and I am less prone to bugs living in my soil. This way I can also decide for myself how much I want to drink. After 15 minutes, please take the remaining water to water other plants. The lighter my location, the thirstier I become. This also means that, during summer, I drink more than during winter. As long as my soil stays slightly moist, I’m a happy plant.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • I like to get fertilized once a month during growing season, which runs from March to September. Outside of this period I don’t need fertilizer, as I will be resting. Always read the instructions on the packaging of the fertilizer to make sure not to overfertilize me.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • Did you just bring me home from the garden centre? You can leave me be in the pot that I came in for the next few months. I like to get used to my new living space in my own pot for a bit. After these few months a new pot? In spring, every other year, please! Put new potting soil in as well, and always make sure that I get a pot that is at least 20% bigger than my previous one. Then I can stretch my roots. Have I stretched my roots too much and are they coming out of the bottom of the pot? Then I might need a repot before then.

It is very important to plant me in an inner pot first before putting me in a decorative pot. Thus, you can check if you’ve overwatered me by checking if there is water on the bottom of the decorative pot. You can also easily water me from the bottom.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • You can easily cut away my old leaves with good pruning scissors. Do I have a long branch? Feel free to cut this one too, so I grow in a nice, compact shape.

  • What is my superpower?
  • See my beautiful leaves? These can purify the air like the best! I can increase your concentration by up to 15%. If that is not a superpower, then I don't know what is.

  • Did you know that...
  • You have to clean my leaves once in a while. Do this with a cloth or a sponge, and release me from all the dust that lies on my leaves. Think of it this way, I breathe through my leaves. With all that dust, I cannot breathe. If you clean me, I can breathe again and purify the air in your house, so let’s clean those leaves!

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

What do I like?

I like a regular, small sip of lukewarm water, but make sure not to overwater me! I hate this. I also like to get fertilizer once a month during growing season.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
