Hi, I am

Mels

WHO'S

THIS

Guy?

Hi! My name is Mels.

I am a Ficus Elastica Melany, better known as the rubber plant. My dark green leaves and red protective leaves around my new leaves provide a nice contrast. By the way, those protective leaves are called cataphylls. Did you know that?

Together with Audrey, I flew all the way over from Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, I grow from a shoot to a full-grown plant in one and a half years. Once I am big enough, I am taken to Plantanious, where I will grow for an additional six months. On the movie you can see where I come from. What a journey, huh?

MORE INFO

  • Where should you place me?
  • I prefer to stand in front of an east or west facing window, or a few metres away from a south facing window. That way I can catch some sunrays, but I avoid the strong midday sun. Be careful with open windows or doors, because I don’t like draft winds.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • Give me a sip of lukewarm water regularly, and make sure that my soil stays slightly moist at all times. Also make sure that there is no water left at the bottom of my pot, as this could cause my roots to rot. Before watering me, always check if I am thirsty or not. You can check by lifting me up. Am I heavy? Skip the watering. Am I light? Give me a sip. You can also stick your finger in my soil. Finger comes out with soil sticking to it? I don’t need water just yet. Finger comes out dry? Then I’d like some water. I also prefer to be watered from the bottom, by putting water in my saucer. This way, I can drink how much I need. After 15 minutes I am done drinking and you can use the remaining water to water other plants.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • I like to get fertilizer during growing season, which runs from March to September. During this period, I like to get fertilizer once a month. Stick to the recommended amount stated on the packaging to prevent over-fertilizing. Outside of the growing season, I don’t need fertilizer.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • If you’ve just bought me, leave me in my original pot for the first few months to let me get used to my new surroundings. Once I am acclimatised, I like to have a new pot every other year that is at least 20% larger than my previous pot. I’d also like fresh potting soil. The larger pot gives me room to grow, and the fresh soil gives me the necessary nutrients I need to grow. I would like to be repotted in spring. If I grow so fast you can see my roots come out of the bottom of the pot, you can also repot me earlier.

It is very important to plant me in an inner pot first before putting me in a decorative pot. Thus, you can check if you’ve overwatered me by checking if there is water on the bottom of the decorative pot. You can also easily water me from the bottom.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • I am a fast grower, and if you want to keep me compact and bushy, you will have to prune me from time to time. It is best to do this in summer or at the end of the growing season. Feel free to cut off my long branches so I can put my energy into new growth.

  • What is my superpower?
  • I can let my roots grow down, which will harden once they reach the ground. This gives me a sturdy, strong trunk that makes me grow even bigger! I can also purify the air in the house with my large leaves. Healthy air, that’s what everyone wants, isn’t it?

  • Did you know that...
  • My large leaves like to be dust-free. Clean them regularly with a sponge or cloth to remove dust, so I can breathe and purify the air even better. You can also take me outside in the summer rain – this does wonders. After a good shower, I will shine bright and look as good as new.

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
