WHO'S

THIS

CUTIE?

Hi, I am Charles!

You may also know me as the Solanum White Charles, this is also where my name is derived from. I am a blue potato bush, despite my white flowers. In fact, I'm what they call a cultivar, which means I'm a bred plant. I have a classic appearance and bloom profusely into the fall.

Together with my sisters Yasmin and Violet, I come from South America. From Paraguay, to be exact. We have exchanged this lovely warm climate for this cold little country called The Netherlands, and are waiting at Plantanious for the chance to come and brighten up your garden! Believe me, you do not want to miss me in your garden.

MORE INFO

  • What is my fave spot?
  • Warmth, warmth, warmth. That’s what I love! Put me in a sunny, sheltered spot. This is where I feel most at home. Be careful with the bright afternoon sun, especially with my delicate white flowers. With me you have the choice: plant me in the open ground or in a pot. Both options are fine by me!

  • Am I winter hardy?
  • No, unfortunately I am not winter hardy. In the open ground I will probably not survive the winter. Did you plant me in a pot? Then you could let me hibernate indoors. In this case, bring me inside in the garage as soon as temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius, and keep me inside until it stops freezing outside and temperatures start rising again. Usually this is from April onwards.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • I can drink a lot, so I’d like to be watered regularly during the flowering season from April to September. If I am planted in a pot I drink even more, as I will dry out faster. Am I planted in a pot? Then also make sure you have a pot with holes at the bottom, this is very important! This way I am not standing with my roots in the water constantly, because it can drain away. Give me less water outside the flowering season, which runs from April to September.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • I can grow like crazy, so give me a some fertilizer every week to provide me with enough nutrients. When doing this, make sure you stick to the recommended amount listed on the package, and only fertilize during the flowering season. Outside of the flowering season, I don't need fertilizer.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • Do you want to see me grow big and bloom beautifully? Then be sure to give me a new pot every year that is at least 20% larger than my previous pot, and fill it with fresh potting soil. Do this in spring, so I can get back to work after my winter hibernation!

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • Pruning me is not necessary, but you can still do it of course. Are my branches getting too long? Then feel free to prune them back to keep me in shape. I also continue to bloom without pruning, but you can encourage this too by removing my spent flowers.

  • Did you know that...
  • Would you like bees and butterflies in your garden? Choose me! I will bring butterflies and bees into your garden with ease.

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

What do I like?

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
