Hi, I am

Maddy

WHO'S

THIS

CUTIE?

Hi, my name is Maddy!

I am also called the Heliotropium or Heliotrope. People always recognize me by my wonderful smell - and I'm not saying that because it's about me! In fact, I smell like vanilla. If you close your eyes you would think I am a cupcake and almost take a bite of my flowers. Don't do that, just enjoy the smell when I'm in your garden!

You can find me in nature in Peru, Bolivia and Colombia. You can probably imagine that in those places it smells so delicious! Since I was brought to Europe from these South American countries, I have adapted well and love to grow here in Europe.

MORE INFO

  • What is my fave spot?
  • I like to be in the sun, since that is when my flowers grow most abundantly. However, make sure that I do not stand in the bright midday sun, as this can sometimes be too strong. Put me in a sheltered spot, as I also love warmth. You can put me in the open ground, but also in a pot.

  • Am I winter hardy?
  • No, unfortunately I am not winter hardy. If you have me in the open ground, I will not survive the frost. If I am planted in a pot, however, I can! To let me survive the winter, bring me inside in the garage as soon as the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius and let me hibernate indoors. Once temperatures rise and it stops freezing at night you can bring me outside again. Usually this is possible at the beginning of the flowering season, which starts in April.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • During the flowering season, which runs from April to September, I like my soil to stay moist, so I need a lot of water. If I am planted in a pot, pay extra attention! I will dry out quicker in a pot. With a pot it is very important to have holes in the bottom of the pot, so the water can drain away. Outside the flowering season I need less water, and you can let me dry out a bit more.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • I also need fertilizer to grow! Therefore, during the flowering season, give me some fertilizer twice a month, making sure not to give more than the recommended amount mentioned on the package. The flowering season runs from April to September. Outside of these months, you can skip the fertilizer.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • If I am planted in a pot, give me a new pot each year that is at least 20% larger than my previous pot. At the same time, give me a new load of potting soil, preferably humus-rich potting soil. Do this in spring, since that is when I am at my strongest and can therefore recover from my move the fastest.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • I produce so many flowers, and therefore prefer for my old flowers to be cut away every once in a while. Furthermore, if you let me hibernate, you can prune me back in spring, so I can grow nicely again.

  • Did you know that...
  • With my delicious vanilla scent, you can probably imagine that I am a real butterfly and bee attractor! Put me in your garden, and in no time it will be a party with the most beautiful butterflies and bees in your garden!

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
