Hi, I am

Maya

WHO'S

THIS

CUTIE?

Hi, my name is Maya!

The plant experts also call me the Cestrum Elegans or the Bastard Jasmine. My flowers have a dark red color and will transform into red berries after blooming. You will enjoy my flowers until autumn.

My roots are in Central and South America, where I am an exuberant grower and bloomer in the wild. I love a warm and tropical climate, and therefore can grow up to 4 feet tall in these countries! I come in different colors, but here at Plantanious I only come in a deep red color.

MORE INFO

  • What is my fave spot?
  • As I said, I like a warm and tropical climate. Even if you don’t live in a climate like this, I can still thrive in your garden! Put me in the sun and in a sheltered spot where you can enjoy my beauty. Be careful with the bright afternoon sun, because it can be too harsh for my leaves. You can put me in the open ground, but also in a pot.

  • Am I winter hardy?
  • You can probably imagine that I, with my love for warmth, am not winter hardy. So if you have put me in the open ground, I will most likely not survive the winter. Did you plant me in a pot? Then you can make me survive! In this case, bring me inside in the garage as soon as the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, and let me hibernate indoors. Put me back outside as soon as the flowering season starts, around April. Be sure to do this only after it stops freezing both during the day and at night.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • I love a good sip of water! During the flowering season, which runs from April to September, make sure that my soil always stays moist and that you give me enough water. If you planted me in a pot, keep in mind that I drink more, since I have a smaller reserve. It is also very important that my pot has holes at the bottom, as excess water must always be able to drain away. I hate wet feet! Outside the growing season I need less water.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • Since I am such a fast grower, I need fertilizer every week. That way I can provide you with my beautiful flowers all summer long! To do this, give me the recommended amount that is on the package. Outside the flowering season, which runs from April to September, I do not need any fertilizer.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • If you planted me in a pot, it is important to give me a new pot every year that is at least 20% larger than my previous pot. When you repot me, also give me new potting soil right away and I will bloom beautifully again! Preferably do this in spring, so I start fresh and have enough energy to recover from repotting.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • Do you want to enjoy my floral glory for a long time? Of course you do! Then make sure you cut away all my spent flowers, so you encourage my flower growth.

  • Did you know that...
  • I am very good at attracting bees and butterflies with my beautiful flowers!

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
