WHO'S

THIS

CUTIE?

Hi! My name is Violet.

You guessed it, I got my name from my color. I am also known as the Solanum Rantonnetii/Lycianthes or the blue potato bush. So do I grow potatoes? No, definitely not. The potato is only related to me. With me in the garden you can enjoy beautiful flowers!

I come from Paraguay, South America, just like Charles and Yasmin. The three of us have traveled a long way to get to the Netherlands! Now we are shining in many gardens, and with good reason. We are indispensable in your garden!

MORE INFO

  • What is my fave spot?
  • I am the most happy in a bright spot, where I can catch some sun rays. Make sure you do not let me stand in the bright afternoon sun. This is often too bright for my petals. Also put me in a sheltered spot. I am, of course, from South America, so you can probably imagine that I love warmth! You can plant me in the open ground as well as in a pot.

  • Am I winter hardy?
  • No, unfortunately I am not winter hardy. I like the warmth, not the cold! So unfortunately, if I'm in the open ground, I probably won't survive the winter. Did you plant me in a pot? Lucky you! Then you can bring me inside in the garage and let me hibernate indoors. In this case, bring me inside as soon as the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius and do not take me back outside until the flowering season starts and it is no longer freezing, which is usually from April onwards.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • I like a sip of water! Give me a splash of water regularly during the flowering season, which runs from April to September, and watch me grow. Did you plant me in a pot? Then you should give me a little more water, because I will dry out faster. In a pot, it is very important to have holes at the bottom of the pot, so that excess water can easily drain away and my roots are not in the water constantly. Outside the flowering season I need less water.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • In order to grow, I need a portion of fertilizer every week. Please stick to the recommended amount on the package, because I don't like too much fertilizer. You only need to fertilize me during the flowering season.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • Every year I need a new pot, so that I can continue to grow. Make sure that the new pot is at least 20% larger than my previous pot, and give me a new load of potting soil filled with nutrients. Do this repotting in spring, so that I have a good start of the year.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • I'm such a big bloomer, I'll just keep on flowering! However, you can remove my old, spent flowers to give the flowering and growth a boost. You can also prune back my long tendrils to maintain my shape. However, this is not necessary, so you can also just let me do my thing!

  • Did you know that...
  • I am very good at attracting butterflies and bees to your garden! Just put me in your garden and see what happens. Be surprised!

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
