Hi, I am

Yasmin

WHO'S

THIS

CUTIE?

Hi! My name is Yasmin.

Plant experts also know me as the Solanum Jasminoiides. I am related to the potato plant, and my flowers therefore resemble those of the potato. Unlike my little brother Charles and sister Violet, I am a real climber! I also bloom abundantly and this usually continues until the end of September. Enjoy your garden with me for a long time!

I come from far away! Together with Violet and Charles I come all the way from Paraguay, South America. Here we grow in the wild in the nice tropical climate. So what are you doing here, you might think? I would love to show off my floral splendor in your garden, that's why!

MORE INFO

  • What is my fave spot?
  • I love the sun and like to stand in a warm, sheltered spot. Be careful with the bright afternoon sun though, because it can be quite intense at times and this is not always good for my flowers and leaves. You can plant me in the open ground as well as in a pot.

  • Am I winter hardy?
  • Unfortunately I am not winter hardy. However, if you planted me in a pot, you can let me hibernate! Put me in my indoor hibernation spot in the garage as soon as the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, and put me outside again as soon as it stops freezing and the temperatures rise. Usually this is from April onwards.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • I like a regular sip! Water me regularly during the flowering season from April to September to make sure my soil stays moist. Did you plant me in a pot? Then keep in mind that I need more water. Make sure I'm planted in a pot with holes at the bottom of the pot so the water can drain properly. This is very important! Outside of the flowering season, I need less water.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • I need some fertilizer every week during the flowering season. Stick to the recommended amount here so that I don't get too much fertilizer. Also, only fertilize me during the flowering season, outside the flowering season I will be resting.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • Am I planted in a pot? Then I like to stretch my roots every year in a new pot that is at least 20% larger than my previous pot. Also give me a new load of potting soil and I'll be happy! Repot me in spring so I have enough energy to recover from my move.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • I can get very long branches because I am a fast grower. You can of course guide these and let them grow against something, but you can also prune them back if you prefer. You can also cut away my spent flowers to make me grow even more flowers!

  • Did you know that...
  • Unlike my brother Charles and sister Violet, I am an excellent climber! So if you put me up against a rack, I will gladly climb it.

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
