Hi, I am Marina!
You probably know me as the Limonium. Maybe my little sister, the Limonium Statice, looks familiar to you too. Commonly, I am also called the Sea Lavender. With my purple flowers and coarse leaves with salt crystals, I am a surprising sight, because I can glisten in the sun because of these crystals! My flowers also attract many bees and butterflies.
I originate from a wide area, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Mediterranean and the Caucasus. With my nickname, the Sea Lavender, you can probably imagine that I am a real coastal plant. If you live by the sea and regularly have to deal with the salty, rough sea breeze, I am your best friend. Don't live by the sea? No problem at all! I also do very well in the country side or urban areas.
Sunshine and warmth, that's what I like. Put me in a sunny spot. I can handle a gust of wind. Keep in mind that the midday sun can be quite strong at times. You can plant me in the open ground, but also in a pot.
No matter how strong I look, I am unfortunately not winter hardy. However, it is possible to put me in a pot instead of in the ground. Then you can choose to let me hibernate inside in the garage so I can shine in the garden again next year, literally! Bring me inside when temperatures get below 10 degrees Celsius, and only take me back outside when the temperatures rise. Usually this is at the beginning of the flowering season in April.
During the flowering season, which runs from April to September, I like my soil to be moist. Water me regularly to prevent my soil from drying out. If I am planted in a pot, keep in mind that I need more water. Also, it is very important to put me in a pot with holes at the bottom, so that the water I don't need can drain away. I don't like it when water stays at the bottom of my pot. Around the flowering season I need less water and you can let my soil get drier.
I also need nutrition to grow! Therefore, give me fertilizer once a month during the flowering season. It is important here to stick to the recommended amount. The flowering season usually runs from April to September. Outside the flowering season, I do not need fertilizer, and my reserve is enough.
If you have decided to plant me in a pot, give me a new pot each year that is at least 20% larger than my previous pot, and fill it with humus-rich potting soil. Do this in spring, so I can recover quickly. The combination of a larger pot with fresh soil will promote new growth.
I am a very easy plant, so you do not need to prune me. You can remove my brown leaves or dead branches, but in general I will continue to flower and grow.
In the Netherlands, I was voted "the pearl of the garden season" in 2020. In this year, I was the most outstanding garden plant. How cool is that!

Where should you place me?
I prefer to be in a light place, but beware of the intense midday sun. I can stand a bit of wind!
What do I like?
I like a regular sip of water, and I also like to get some plant food once a month. Outside the flowering season, I don't need any fertilizer and less water.

If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
