WHO'S

THIS

CUTIE?

Hi, I am Julia!

Better known as Gerbera Garvinea and Emma's little sister. You have certainly seen me in bouquets, as I am also sold as a cut flower. However, I am also a very nice garden plant, which you can enjoy until November. Yes, that is how long I bloom. Impressive, right? Bring color to your garden with my cheerful appearance!

I am originally from a large number of countries! My roots grow in South Africa, Asia, South America and Tasmania. Nowadays, I am also widely cultivated in the Netherlands, and you can find me here in a myriad of colors and species. I can be found pretty much everywhere!

MORE INFO

  • What is my fave spot?
  • Give me a sunny spot, that’s what I love. My flowers grow even better and brighter when bathing in sunlight! Be careful that the bright afternoon sun does not damage my flowers or leaves. Would you like to have me in a pot? That is possible. In the open ground? That is also possible! Nice and versatile, right?

  • Am I winter hardy?
  • No no no, definitely not! I hate the cold and am not winter hardy. Did you plant me in a pot? Then bring me inside in the garage when it gets colder than 10 degrees Celsius. Then I can hibernate inside and you can enjoy my flowers for another year next year! Do not put me back outside until the weather is nice and warm and it is no longer freezing, which is usually from April onwards.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • I can be a very thirsty plant. In fact, I like a lot of water during the flowering season, which runs from April to September. When planted in a pot, I need more water than when I am planted in open ground. Also, if I am planted in a pot, it is very important to have a pot with holes at the bottom of the pot to prevent root rot. Outside of the flowering season, you can give me a little less water.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • I am an exuberant bloomer, and this exuberant bloomer therefore needs fertilizer every week! Be sure to give me the recommended amount listed on the package, and only do so during the flowering season. Outside of the flowering season, I don't bloom and therefore don't need fertilizer.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • A new pot is what I need every year. Make sure to plant me in a pot that is at least 20% larger than the previous one. That way I can continue to grow nicely. Make sure to repot me in spring, when I am at my strongest. And while you're at it, give me some new, humus-rich potting soil as well, so I can grow on for a while!

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • It is very important to remove my spent flowers with stems. This will allow my new, other flowers to continue to grow. You can also prune away my dead plant parts in spring.

  • Did you know that...
  • I am an unscented flower. So if you can't stand the strong smell of some flowers and plants, I am your best friend!

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
