WHO'S

THIS

CUTIE?

Hi, Basil here!

Yes, you smell it right, I am a Basil. An Ocimum Basil to be exact, probably known to you as the Thai Basil. With my wonderful fragrance and beautiful purple flowers you would love to have me on your terrace. These scents and colors also attract butterflies and bees to your garden. Enjoy!

In "the wild" I can be found in, of course, Southeast Asia, but also in Africa and South America. Throughout history, I have played a role in several cultures, being seen as a sacred herb in India, for example.

MORE INFO

  • What is my fave spot?
  • As you can imagine, I love warmth and sunshine! I love to stand in a sheltered place where I can enjoy the sun. But, be careful with the bright afternoon sun! This is often a bit too much for me. You can plant me in the open ground or in a pot.

  • Am I winter hardy?
  • You probably know by now that I love warmth. Not the cold! I am therefore not a winter hardy plant. Do not want to miss my fragrance next year? Then don't plant me in the open ground, but in a pot. Bring me inside in the garage when the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius and let me hibernate inside. As soon as the temperature rises again and it stops freezing I can go outside again. Usually this is from April onwards.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • I like to have moist soil during the flowering season, which runs from April to September. Keep in mind that I need more water when I'm in a pot than when I'm in the open ground. Also, with a pot, it is very important to have a pot with holes at the bottom, so that excess water can be drained away properly and I will not suffer from rotting roots. Outside of the flowering season, I need less water as I am resting.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • To keep growing well, I like to get some fertilizer every week during the flowering season. The flowering season runs from April to September. It is important to stick to the recommended amount of fertilizer, since too much is not good for my roots. Outside of the flowering season, you don't need to give me any fertilizer.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • Did you plant me in a pot? Then I like to have a new pot every year that is at least 20% larger than the previous one. When repotting, also give me new potting soil, since this is full of nutrients that make me very happy. Do this during spring, then I recover faster.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • If I am planted in a pot, you can prune me in spring, but this is not a requirement. During the flowering season, make sure that you cut away my dead flowers at all times. That way I can put all my energy into new flowers and new growth. Do you think my long branches are growing fast? You can let me continue to grow, but you can also prune if you don’t want my branches to grow too long.

  • Did you know that...
  • I am a real butterfly and bee attractor. If you have me in your garden, you are guaranteed a butterfly and bee party in no time, and I smell delicious too! All the ingredients for a garden party in the pocket.

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am a born decorator! During my growth, biological products are also used that make me not edible, so just let me shine in that beautiful garden of yours!

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
