WHO'S

THIS

CUTIE?

Hi! My name is Donna.

My name is derived from my Latin name, Anisodontea. I also have the nickname Cape Mallow, more on this later. I am a real butterfly and bee attractor. With my abundance of pink flowers, you will be blessed with a sea of color in the garden well into fall with me.

As I mentioned, my nickname is Cape Mallow. This is based on where my roots are, which is in South Africa.

MORE INFO

  • What is my fave spot?
  • I am a sun lover, but do prefer a sheltered spot. Be careful with the bright afternoon sun, as it might be too bright for my petals. I prefer to get several hours of sun a day. That is how I get the most flowers. I can be planted in open ground as well as in a pot.

  • Am I winter hardy?
  • No, I am not a winter hardy plant. Just give me warmth and sunshine! Would you like to see me in the garden again next year? Then plant me in a pot and bring me inside in the garage as soon as the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius. Let me hibernate inside and bring me back out as soon as the temperatures rise and it stops freezing at night. Usually this is around April, when the flowering season begins.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • I need a lot of water! Always keep my soil moist and don’t let it dry out during the flowering season, which runs from April to September. If I am planted in a pot, it is important that you keep an extra close eye on this, because I need even more water in a pot. It is very important to have holes at the bottom of the pot, to prevent water from staying at the bottom of my pot. Outside the flowering season I need less water.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • Not only do I need a lot of water, but I also need fertilizer. Give me fertilizer every week during the flowering season, which runs from April to September, and stick to the recommended amount. Do not give me any fertilizer outside the flowering season, as I will be resting.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • Did you plant me in a pot? Then I like to have a new pot every year that is at least 20% larger than my previous pot. Provide me with fresh, standard potting soil full of nutrients to promote growth. I would like you to do this in spring, because then I am at my strongest. Also, in my new pot I can continue to grow.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • It is important to remove my spent flowers during the flowering season. This promotes new growth. You can also prune me several times during the season, because I can grow quite fast. By pruning, you can preserve my shape and promote growth.

  • Did you know that...
  • With me, you bring insect life into your garden: I am a real butterfly and bee attractor!

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
