Hi, I am

Fleur

WHO'S

THIS

CUTIE?

Hi, my name is Fleur!

The well-known Fuchsia. Here at Plantanious they think my flowers look like ballerinas. I am a true classic and can be found in many Dutch gardens. All summer long I will treat you to my exuberant flowers. Enjoy!

Although you can find me in almost every Dutch garden, I originally come from very far away. How far away? Well, all tropical areas around the equator, that's how far! Yet I can grow in very different climates. I can grow in tropical areas, but also at high altitudes where it can be very cold. A jack-of-all-trades!

MORE INFO

  • What is my fave spot?
  • I like a little sunshine, but am at my happiest in a place where I can enjoy the shade for part of the day. The best place to put me is in a spot where I don't get the bright afternoon sun on my leaves, but where I can get some sun rays in the morning or evening. Also put me in a sheltered spot, so I am protected from the wind. You can put me in the open ground, but I will do fine in a pot as well!

  • Am I winter hardy?
  • No, unfortunately I am not winter hardy. Still don’t want to say goodbye to my beautiful flowers? Understandable! In this case, bring me inside in the garage to hibernate as soon as the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius. Do not take me back outside until the temperatures rise and it is no longer freezing outside. Usually this is from April onwards.

  • How much water do I drink?
  • It is important to keep my soil moist during the flowering season, which runs from April to September, so water me regularly. Especially if I am planted in a pot, as I will use more water then. It is also very important, if I am planted in a pot, to have a pot with holes at the bottom so that the water can drain away. Outside of the flowering season, I need less water.

  • How much fertilizer do I need?
  • To see me bloom profusely (believe me, you want that!) I need fertilizer twice a month. When doing this, make sure you stick to the recommended amount listed on the package. Give me plant food only during the flowering season, which runs from April to September.

  • When do I need to be repotted?
  • If you planted me in a pot, I would really like it if you gave me a new pot every year. Make sure it is at least 20% larger than the previous one, and give me new, humus-rich potting soil. This way I can continue to grow! Please repot me in spring, as I will be the strongest during this time.

  • When do I need to be pruned?
  • Since I grow so many flowers, it is best to remove my spent flowers. That way there is room for new flowers to grow and shine. In the spring, you can also prune me back to keep my shape.

  • Did you know that...
  • My flowers look just like ballerinas! So when there is a light breeze, you will see my flowers dancing like ballerinas. So beautiful!

  • Am I edible?
  • No, I am not edible.

Where should you place me?

I like to stand in a light, sheltered spot. I love a bit of sun, but be careful with the fierce midday sun!

What do I like?

I like a very regular sip of water, because I drink a lot! I also like to get some fertilizer twice a month. Outside the flowering season, I need less water and no fertilizer.

Adopt Rainforest

Plantanious works together with the Work with Nature foundation. Our tropical rainforests are disappearing at a rapid pace and an enormous biodiversity is being lost along with the trees. If it were up to us, the jaguar would soon walk around again in the rainforest in Costa Rica protected by 'Adopt Rainforest'! The place where many of our special plants originate. In order to make an important contribution to the goal of the foundation - to protect 2,000 hectares of rainforest in the next ten years - we donate part of our turnover to protect part of the tropical rainforest. To achieve their goal, the foundation puts money into protection, conservation, reforestation, education and research.
